I was responding to the 'kicking ass' comment.
And you are making it sound like you have to choose between the two. Personally i`d go for someone with enthusiasm with enough talent to get the job done myself rather than a human metronone whos music sends me to sleep.

True... But we're talking about talent... Maybe a drummer who can only play one beat on the kick drum over and over is good for certain styles of music and bands like The White Stripes, who require a simplistic approach to begin with... But many many styles require a little more, if you wanted to be in a band like Judas Priest (whom you admire) you can't just pick any random guy off the streets simply because they can get the job done.. You need someone who can do something a little extra, i'm talking about folks who can compose original pieces of music AND play it, not just immitate the simple music they listen to and do everything they are told... I have no problems with musicians like Meg White and Cliff Williams who just do their job and nothing else, but i also don't see any reason to bash drummers or bassists simply because they assert themselves and are confidant enough of their talents to actually use it as opposed to playing bitch to the singer and guitarist... To put it simply, i'm disturbed by your assertion that any musicians who go beyond straight 4/4 rhythms and power chords are automatically wankers.
Neil Peart, Steve Vai and many musicians worked damn hard to be as good as they are on their instruments, so to say they don't care about the music simply because they prefer a complex or flashy approach to power chords and pop songs is pretty ignorant... You make it out like they view music in a passionless way and only care about the attention and excess, if that were true they would be making more accessible, profitable music like the kind you seem to prefer, it's not like they couldn't write a simple, basic pop song if they want to, they just don't. |

I don't get where the neil piert robot comments are coming from. Watching him do a drum solo was so ****ing intense. He was far from being mechanical. And rush's songs don't sound that way either...

Plus Neil can improvise, which few robots can do.

It has been predicted, Neil Peart will lead the robot revolution that will destroy all mankind.
I've been saying it for years. |

Now i`ll try & explain this as best I can , I just don`t like 'technical' rock music. I don`t know why that is. I can listen to other genres where the musicians are good in that way , but for me personally it doesn`t work in rock music. Now if you want to listen to a band because they are like that then fine. But if you are trying to convince me that someone is better than a bone fide rock icon JUST because of that then I will laugh in your face every time. As I said at the beginning of this thread , the day Neal Peart writes or plays on a song as lifechanging & full of attitude & energy like My Generation that STILL sends shivers down my spine everytime I hear it to this day then i`ll happily vote for him.

ME go off on one?
And no I don`t think 'my opinion is the only one'.I`m expressing mine you are expressing yours.I don`t see what the problem is there. Maybe you didn`t quite catch the title of the thread , it`s Keith Moon vs Neal Peart , not the Neal Peart Appreciation Thread.
