In your extensive musical wisdom, please tell me, who is a better technical drummer than John Bonham?

Bill Bruford. Neil Peart. Pat Mastelotto. Michael Giles.

And a hundred thousand jazz drummers.

Lolz. Anything that isn't textbook prog? Because I can assure you most of them drew influence from Bonham, and were certainly no better. Neil Peart is probably the best of those that you forthcame, and he was good, but he wasn't Bonzo. No, sorry.

I...didn't even know there were that many jazz drummers. If that many drummers put him to shame, I should think he's pretty mediocre.

You asked him for some drummers which are technically superior to Bonham and he named some. I don't see where influence comes into this.

And technically, there are many jazz drummers who are superior to Bonham. But technique isn't half of the story, so that doesn't matter, right? Bonham in general, is far from mediocre. But he's certainly no slouch on the technical front either.

I just meant that in drawing influence from mainstream rock drummers like Bonzo and Moon that is was very likely that they developed similar techniques. I suppose there are those who may be technically superior to Bonham. I shouldn't have uttered that misstatement. But I heartily believe he is the best overall drummer. His energy and intensity were simply incredible, and I don't believe anyone - including jazz drummers, yes - could rival his presence onstage.

That is, er, what I meant to say. ;)

Is it just me or have Michael Giles and Bill Bruford been making music before Bonham became famous? I'm making the point that there are many, many drummers who are technically superior than Bonham, and saying no one can touch him is ridiculous.

We are talking about the two best drummers in history here, but I'd have to say that Keith Moon has the upper hand over Bonham.

Just take a look at the intensity in Keith's drumming (as well as the performance in full) in this video:
YouTube - the who - my generation

You wouldn't see that kinda stuff at Led Zep's concerts.

.

I agree entirely. i understand why bonham is more favoured, because he was more organized, but moon was beautiful because he was sloppy and absolutely insane. he tought bonzo to lay his base drum with tin foil. i love both of them, they are the best drummers in rock history, but keith moon is the father and bonzo is the son
