I wouldn't call Townshend THE most ambitious songwriter from the 60s. I'd certainly say he was one of the most progressive songwriters at the time. But he dosen't deserve more credit than Lennon/Mccartney. And lets not forget Wilson, Zappa, Hendrix, Barrett, Fripp and all those guys, Townshend was just one of many ambitious artists from that period.

Well I did limit it to the UK. In terms of length and quantity of ambitious material, I think there is some justification in saying what I did of Townshend for that particular period, even if his work was far from the best.

They plainly started just chasing the dollar. No more forays into the experimental; the adventurous spirit was abandoned entirely and they became straightout arena rockers. Lame.

Actually, their later material was more of a return to the form of music they were making when they started out, it was just more poppy and polished, it was still The Who.

Whos Next is probably my favorite Who album, well either it or Tommy. I know some people hate it because they thought they were selling out. I ****ing hate this kind of logic that anything with poppy melodies that dosen't sound like it was recorded in an outhouse is not "authentic".
