I need more of this subgenre
..that I cant identify. My best guess is has to be a subgenre of Heavy Metal (too vague to find more with). By searching many are associated with Power Metal but to my ears the sound is very very different. Not to mention, Power Metal rarely deviates from crisp vocals let alone growling.

Links seem to be bugging out on my end so I'll leave urls as I cannot confirm if they're working. I hope you guys enjoy the songs. |
Hmm. Our resident metal head, Batlord, will be able to set you straighter than I could, but I know both Grave Digger and Gamma Ray are considered Power Metal. I don't think it's a different sub-genre just because there are growled vocals. Let me listen to the others in the meantime and I'll get back to you.

Nah that's power metal. Try summa dese:

Yeah. Having listened to them I concur. Power Metal. Nothing special about it. Bit of what you might call NWOBHM or standard metal in there with some of them, but no new sub-genre. Metal, pure and simple.

Incorrect. New members are not allowed post links until they have 15 posts made, however this refers to personal links, not YouTube so far as I know. At any rate, YouTube is definitely not discouraged here.

Mike was one of the under the radar players. There was a lot of interplay with the Scorps and Uli and people in that circle that pushed each other. It spit out some great stuff for a guitar nerd like me.

Edit: To clarify, modern Power Metal seems to be dominated by Neoclassical/ Symphonic/ Melodic/ etc subgenres. Quote:
Though I gotta say I really like the growling vocal style. It seems so rare to find it in non-extreme Metal (extreme as in Death, Doom, Black, etc). Thanks for the recs, I'll be going through these for a while! |
I don't know how up to date it is, but there was a music documentary called Metal: A Headbanger's Journey. The movie had a "metal family tree". If there is an updated one out on the interwebs, you may find more bands to check out.
