Jazzy, maybe a little funky, but it isn't rock.

And is this Rock? Truth is I don’t care what you call it, I’m just looking for somewhere on MB to dump it.
Pat Metheny, Joni Mitchell, Jaco Pastorius, Michael Brecker - "Shadows And Light". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLKb9Ms68ME |
Jazz fusion I guess, sorta what you get when a rock band (generally drum kit, electric guitar, bass guitar, keyboard) plays jazz, typically tinged with that Miles Davis / Return to Forever / Mahavishnu Orchestra / Weather Report flavour.
But since you seem into that sort of stuff (f.ex seem to know Pastorius), I guess you already knew that and just wanted to create some clickbaity way to make people listen. |
Nah, this is rock.

what is rock anyways guitar bass Drums ..???? heck u dont even need bass TBO look at the White stripes what u do with thoes instruments is a hole other story |
Classes don't mean much these days, at least when it comes to music. A band can be guitar/bass/drums and be a dance band. If you like it, that's all that matters.

your right everything is blended and shaken and swirled up these days

So artist(s) could be electronica duo, singer / songwriter, jazz band, big band, power trio, etc. They can play various genres defined by their compositional and other musical traits, like prog rock, fusion jazz, ambient, etc. So this is classifying two different things and separating genre from instrumentation and performers (unless otherwise noted). This sometimes works and other times doesn't. It's purely descriptive. This way, a singer- / songwriter could f ex. play thrash metal. This is different from the way you're thinking which is one definition where both artist and the music they play kinda blend together. So I guess you might say the genre of music a band plays defines whether they're f ex. a jazz band or rock band. If a big band plays rock, they're a rock band. It's arbitrary and whatever (who cares?), but it might at least help understanding and any potential discussion if we sort between these different ways of classification. |
