This is a difficult choice because their body of work is very different in terms of quantity. I guess if only one band had to exist, I'd pick the Smiths. But - REM has one of the most consistent discographies ever. In fact, I'd take REM's 'Up' over any Smiths album.

Smiths and then onto Morrissey's solo career.

No big REM fans here I see. Murmur and Reckoning are as great as any Smiths album, even if the Smiths singles were better. The Queen is Dead would almost be a perfect album if it wasn't for Vicar in a Tutu. And while I enjoy some of Morrissey's solo material, his solo albums weren't nearly as great as the Smiths - if it was between REM and Morrissey solo, I'd take REM without a second thought (Kill Uncle is underrated though, just throwing that out there)

I'm a basic bitch but REM are fine with some nice songs but impossible to care about. The Smiths took some time to get into but now I stan.

I don't think I've met one person who likes the Smiths that I didn't wish got hit by a car. And also, the amount of people who say "This band saved me." It's so painful. Someone said How Soon is Now is the Stairway to Heaven of the 1980s. I'm not a Zeppelin fanboi but you can **** off with that ****. I think highly of johnny marr but Morrisey is a biggot that emo kids overlook because he inspired **** poetry in their diary.
Which is to say REM wins by default. I like REM but there are times where I'll hear a song on the radio from REM and go "Oh yeah, I forgot about those guys." Great question, Tejas.

So you don't like The Smiths for the same reason you don't like the left: some cringe weirdos made you want to hate them like a milquetoast reactionary.

I hate the Smiths because Morrisey is human garbage.
