Rose Maddox is terribly underrated. Way back when, when the Maddox boys decided to form a band, one of them was out trying to snag a gig. The owner of this popular bar was torn between them and a rival band. The owner asked, "Do you have a female singer?" He instantly answered yes. The owner gave Maddox the nod. Maddox had lied. They did not have a female lead singer but they had a baby sister named Rose who could belt it out. He rushed home and told Rose, barely in her teens, that she had to front the band--something she had never done. After some rehearsing, they went to the bar and played and Rose slew the crowd and she never looked back. She had a long recording career. Amazingly, her last recordings sound really no different than her earlier stuff. Her voice was exactly the same. Never aged. That voice did whatever the hell it wanted.
But Rose is a rocknroll pioneer. The Maddox Bros & Rose recorded some of the earliest rockabilly and I wouldn't be surprised if they originated the genre. Some of their fans think they did. There will never be another like Rose Maddox.
