I've had the pleasure of seeing Maiden live on a handful of occasions. They are decidedly not hair metal. Their musical content deals with a much darker subject matter than the 'let's party' mantra of 80's hair metal.
They came along in the late 70's, as the punk movement was ending it's run at the forefront. ( that's not to say it faded away, it just went back underground, where the true fans are). Their original singer, Paul Di'Anno, left after a few albums. Enter ****inson. His lyrics are rife with historical content, satanic references, etc. Hardly the stuff of 80's mascara metal. And I agree with the above poster. 'Run to the Hills' makes me cringe. I am a Maiden fan, and it's probably one of their worst songs. It's funny how that works. The one song everyone knows isn't the true representation of what the band is all about.

i saw Black Sabbath at miami jalai fronton in 1972 and 1973 at $6.50 for entrance fee WAS not impress . i been asking why before i posted this . even tho i was totally crazy about the band music . it finally hit me = in both concert Black Sabbath sound system was very crude . i saw Alice Cooper "Killer" in the same audiotorium same year it blew me away. and so was Quicksilver Messanger Service with the chamber brothers = the best concert i been too ! Emerson Lake & Palmer was excellent . so since i still love Black Sabbath it had to be the very poor sound system they used in both concert. The most extravegant concert i went to was Alice Cooper "Billion Dollar Babies" 1973 1/2 let me tell you something "this was a expensive stage+sound+special effect and even extra actors in crazy customes . the other concert that was bit cheesy on the sound system was Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes . <--hollywood sport audioturium next to 1/4 mile drag race track "no longer there sold for condos"
