I can't stand the Pixies. Not after Black Francis' over-the-top fanboyism antics.

Yeah, Black Francis of the Pixies was bigger fame-wise, but D. Boon was bigger weight-wise. D. Boon never got as big as Black Francis fame-wise though Black Francis tried to get bigger than D. Boon weight-wise, but failed. Anyway D. Boon was way cooler and aint nothin' can take that away from him.

I saw your Dinosaur Jr. post and realized that I discovered King's X around the same time I was listening to their late 80's stuff. At the time I was going into a lot of funk metal, experimental Sonic Youth-esque stuff and real early alt-rock.

Probably none, or none I can articulate. It's not so much a comparison, as it is to prove a point. Well it basically come down to all I hear about is how everybody imitates the Pixies: Nirvana ... or whoever ... maybe every other 90s alt-Rock band ... etc etc. Well look at who's imitating who. One could create an equally convincing argument that Nirvana borrowed from the Minutemen and bands from the same era just like some argue that Kurt took from the Pixies.

Well, it's nice to see some more members adding something to this thread. Is it just happenstance or is it because Pixies are a band that generate more response? Looks like the latter to me: popular bands get overplayed or over-rated and then comes a resentful backlash....

Song #4: Pavement - Summer Babe (1992)

^ It's obviously the guitar which makes this track, and I love everything about it: the tone, the attack and the way it's centre-stage throughout. This is a band I might play more of, hoping that Summer Babe is typical of their style. Good rec, Mo and OH

For the most part none of that. I don't know how popular Pixies were. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I haven't heard so much of them on radio or wherever else (like at the shopping mall) to say they were overplayed.

If certain fans want to laud their bands like they're rooting for their football team than that is their prerogative. If I poke a little fun at that don't peg me as being "resentful."

If a band gets over-rated then the over-raters are oblivious fans fanatical about their favorite bands obliviously. It's possible for people to disagrees with the over-rating without it coming down to "backlashing."

If I picked seven bands and seven songs, and they weren't to your liking, I wouldn't consider it backlashing.

No. It was to do with who is doing the influencing on bands e.g. like Nirvana: Pixies or other Post-Punk, and Hardcore bands. If you're under the belief that Pixies was an all influencing band, then fine that is your opinion. Just don't dismiss that there were other bands before them that could have been also influential.

^ Sorry Neapolitan ! I realise now that it looks that way on the page, but I wasn't particularly thinking of your comment when I talked about "resentful backlash". I was thinking in general terms about what happens with over-hyped bands. To me, "backlash" is not even a critical word to be using, but "resentful" is unkinder than it should've been. I wish now I had written, "Popular bands get over-played or over-rated and then comes an inevitable re-adjustment."

As regards "poking a little fun" at an artist - yes, I love to do that all the time. Again, I didn't intend to brand you as "resentful" or complain that you were writing something negative about The Pixies; I hope I'm not that hypocritical, especially when, as you point out, I'd done it myself a couple of posts earlier.

And just for the record: my policy on MB is to be polite to fellow members, but to have the right to say unkind things about artists' public-domain material. IMO that is a price they have to pay for taking their songs to the market place. So please, Neapolitan or anyone else, continue to chip in with opinions; from the scathing or the idolatrous, they are all welcome as far as I'm concerned. After all, sharing opinions is exactly what MB is here for !

I agree some ppl give them too much credit, saying they invented the loud quiet loud formula for exmpl is bullsht but i don't get how you despite knowing all that still have this reactionary hate that frankly with your knowledge of music seems beneath you. The pixies are not the only band with an over hyped status, do you hate every artist who's fanbase over hype by giving them too much credit?

Im not saying you have to like the pixies, i have a friend who dislikes black francis because he thinks he's sorta of an ******* personality wise and his music i guess just doesn't do anything for him which i can understand but i don't understand why you have to justify this stand thru this contrarian hipster stand of popularity and originality
