Since I know at least one of you crazies will have an explanation: what's the story behind the band name?

After Billy's first band the Marked didn't work out, he didn't want to jinx it by taking his next band too seriously. He ended up pulling the Smashing Pumpkins out of his ass (and it is the adjective smashing not the verb smashing). He always told people interviewing him that it was god's cruel joke on him when they would ask.

My friend's dad was amused when he first heard the name, and wondered who "Pumpkin Smash" were and what they stood for. it took some time and explanation...

I really like SP and last week I finally got to see Billy Corgan and the new band he's got (cause it's not Smashing Pumpkins even though the ticket said that!!) and I was a bit dissapointed. The band sounds great (the drummer is excellent) and the "old" songs were amazing, but the new songs just don't seem to convince me (nor most of us there). Have you heard them? He's uploaded them in his website.

For a while I was quite disappointed with the quality of the new stuff. I actually don't mind it now. Billy put out a lot of classic material, and now he is just making music the way he wants to make music. In the past he was motivated by personal problems and stress, and now he is more relaxed about it and it shows. I'll keep listening to his Teargarden project just because there are a ton more EPs that are supposed to come out and there actually have been a few hints of his former genius.
I agree with you about referring to them as the Pumpkins these days. When Jimmy was still there I was ok with it, but now that Billy is the last original member left, I find it hard to call them that.
