Gives you time to quit while you're ahead if the quality noticeably begins to decline.

I like the new song 'Song For A Son' but i just don't see it as the Smashing Pumpkins. It just feels like Billy Corgan solo material or Zwan Mk II. The Smashing Pumpkins used to be my favourite band but Billy and his ego destroyed all that. However i try to be an open-minded guy so i will download most of the new songs as they are released and give them a listen, there's bound to be at least 10 songs that are great on their own terms, but i will pretty much hear them as Billy Corgan's solo project.

Like Mellon Collie I'm sure there will be some real gems and a merciless amount of filler.

Very true. Billy's gonna release 44 songs. I can't possibly imagine all of those 44 songs being quality material. But if there's a single album worth of material in those 44 songs i'll be happy enough.

Yeah there's a fair bit of filler on Melon Collie, especially on CD2. They could have narrowed that album down into a pretty sweet single album.

Well let's hope it doesn't decline, as the first song is not very good.

Yup. And yeah it would be nice to have a single album's worth of good tracks out of the set.

Totally agree. And sadly, that goes for almost every double-CD in existence, no matter how much I may like a band.

Well if it totally falls flat on its face Billy Corgan always has his poetry to fall back on

I kid, years ago I use to be the most rabid Smashing Pumkins and Billy Corgan fan I knew. I spent over $1000 on guitar equipment trying to emulate his sound. I use to listen to Melon Collie & the Infinite Sadness religiously and nearly shat myself when I found a Siamese Dreams tab book for guitar. I always knew in the back of my mind that Billy Corgan was a massive control freak with as large an ego which contributed largely the dissolving of the band and sour relationships between the members. I just didn't want to believe that someone who could write such beautiful music could also be that much of a douche, but one day I finally just accepted the fact and the music became less meaningful and important to me. Kind of an odd story, however I just don't want to come across as a SP hater.

Gish was one of my favorite albums for a while when I was in high school. I loved Siamese Dream too. But beyond those and Pisces Iscariot and whatever other old singles are around - I find them pretty unlistenable. Funny story: between the years of about 1998-2001 I tried to sell my Mellon Collie CD to used record stores 3 different times (as one in a stack I was trying to sell) and it was turned down every time. My copy was in excellent condition - it was just that the record stores had too many already (one of them told me that, anyway). But I'm actually glad that I held on to it - even though I may never listen to it I still consider it the final legit SP album.

Even though it was a new direction and that's probably why most don't like it, I think Adore is really good. It's a bit overlong, but not as bad as a double CD. It helps that I was already a fan of electronic & industrial music though, both of which influenced the album to some degree.

someonecompletelyrandom 12-09-2009 06:25 PM

I agree Adore was for me more then welcome into their catalog, but it definetly was the beginning of the end for them.
