The way metal tends to be "dark"* and nihilistic very much comes off as melodramatic and without any depth or truth to it. It's theatrical and silly. But that's part of the appeal of metal, isn't it?

Plus I don't see a nihilistic worldview as a wise position to take. It usually just comes off as an excuse to mope and stop trying, because, like, what's the point, man?

Being nihilistic, and using that as an excuse for misantrophy, because the world doesn't care/is a cruel place/the eventual heat death of the universe, is really just to be part of the problem.

The way a lot of extreme metal revels in negativity actually doesn't lead anyhwere constructive. It's easier to respect when it's goofy (cannibal corpse), than when it's so very serious (black metal).

*: which even really means... what exactly?

Nihilism can also be an inspiration to do whatever the **** you want.

Or what grindy said.

So basically if you're depressed you need to get over it? Stiff upper lip? Smile even if you don't mean it and your heart will follow? Nihilism isn't a choice, it's inoperable cancer. And it's very much a catalyst for some fantastic music, even if a lot of nihilistic metal is admittedly very silly.

Dopethrone's riffs are simple chord progressions but with uncomfortable dissonance. That's what I meant to say. They also feature a ton of slides and sometimes are drenched in wide vibrato, much more than any prior doom act used. The overall sound of the riffs are a hell of a lot more unnerving than prior doom albums.

Nihilism is also a philosophical position. I don't agree with it as a choice, but depression is depression and not to be joked around with.

^This is a better explanation. I see why people like it, basically, but it's just the sort of thing that's guaranteed to make me check the time repeatedly before the album is finally over.

Are you suggesting he's killed someone called Arthur and dismembered him? Now THAT'S nihilism!

Definitely nihilistic, even menacing, but not aggressive. The only song I can think of by them that I'd call aggressive is "We Live".

It's something that can only be described with hand gestures and mouth noises.
