Whatever it is.

I don't see how this is immune to criticism just because it's got a crazy guitar sound.
Except Cathedral don't crush buildings. They seem like a band with subtlety in a genre that maybe doesn't require subtlety.

But yeah, I don't have that testosterone and aggression based approach to metal. It probably explains a lot of my take on metal that, along with metal, my other favorite genre is singer-songwriter.

What's to get? They're heads and they talk.

Seriously, they're not PiL. Are they catchy to you? No? Then maybe you should move on cause they're not supposed to be difficult.

I don't really think of Electric Wizard as aggressive. More like vast, elemental, and hypnotic.

I'd say they have an aggressive, anti-social, confrontational nihilism, even if their lyrics are tongue-in-cheek. But not aggressive in the sense that Slayer are aggressive.

Basically, I find these songs really boring and unimaginative. Black Sabbath and Cathedral did all of this 10-30 years earlier and much better too. This album is largely one note. Dip into any random moment on the album and it's going to sound identical to almost any other moment on the album. That's an exaggeration, but I do think this album is repetitive and uninteresting.

The fact that the album is from 2000 makes it really unimpressive. If they spear headed this kind of music, at least then I could understand it being so underdeveloped. Take away the grimey production and it's just a bunch of really dull metal tunes with nothing much going for them.

2/10
Nah. The riffs sound like blues riffs stripped down to an inhuman level. This is far darker and more nihilistic than the bluesy stuff Black Sabbath or Cathedral did. I think you're not giving them enough credit with the songwriting either. Only two songs on this album have similar construction, and "I, the Witchfinder" is one of the most unique songs I've ever heard in metal.

I'm sorry, but what's that even supposed to mean? How the hell do you strip blues riffs down to "an inhuman level". Blues riffs are already simple.

Darkness and nihilism are preoccupations of the teenage mind. I'm not looking for metal to feel "evil" either, or any such nonsense.

There's a bit of variance of course, but you can't really state with conviction that this album is varied in the larger scheme of thing, can you? This album is pretty damn single minded the way I see it. But that's quite typical of extreme metal albums of various sorts. Most of the album is about that huge crush.

You must toss a lot of art in the bin if you think that.

Probably why mike doesn't get it.
