I love this album so much. Musically, this may be the heaviest "grunge" album ever released, or at least up there with the likes of Gluey Porch Treatments and Houdini by The Melvins. Slow, sludgy Sabbath meets Melvins riffs with a little psychedelia to keep it interesting, and often fairly abrasive as in "Sickman" (which features amazing tribal drumming) and "God Smack." And so damn bleak. Songs about depression, self hatred, drug addiction, suicidal thoughts, and hopelessness galore. This album makes In Utero sound as happy as Hello Kitty. Layne Staley was a tormented soul and the brutal emotional honesty on this album make me wonder why this guy wasn't in therapy. Easily my favorite "grunge" album and my favorite metal album. My favorite tracks are "Junkhead" and "Dirt."

Dafuq?

This **** was cotton candy compared to the Melvins. This was a pop record that you had to intentionally avoid. The Melvins were doing something you had to search for.

I feel like a bit of digging should easily unearth a bunch of heavier grunge albums.

In any case, In Utero is a way more wild, raw and musically diverse album. Dirt feels like it's AIC's version of Nevermind, only without the good songwriting.

Same here. Much like The Dead I've tried so many times but just not my cup of tea at all.
