MB Metal Classics: "Obscura" by Gorguts
Okay, well nobody seems to give much of a **** about Nile, so let's try another one. Step forward, grindy! Oh look! It's a real classic.

It's weird and brilliant. I still think there's a lack of consistency on the second half, but it's still a 9/10 album at worst.
But seriously though. Weirdddddd. When you consider that fellow Quebecois Cryptopsy saw the release of None So Vile with a rabid dog as a vocalist before Gorguts released this, you know you're a ****ing weird band. :P I think Gorguts not getting an album deal back then probably has more to do with the fact that death metal fans weren't ready for this album. Ironically, the only people I've ever known who dislike this album are death metal fans. Even the prog. fans acknowledge this as a work of art (except for Trollheart lulz). |

One of those albums I don't quite get but also don't hold that against it. I'm well aware that it's a singular album and I won't tarnish my potential future dick sucking by saying that the riffs are too obtuse for me like an impatient toddler.

It's hard for me to articulate what makes this such a monster. The complex rif***e and song structure just touches me in soft places. Every time I listen to it, it's fresh, innovative, and beautifully dissonant. Though I must say that I don't find it all that weird anymore. 10/0

It does make me wonder what extreme metal would have sounded like had post-punk been a much more direct influence from day 1.

The Erosion of Sanity is nice training wheels though.
