MB Metal Classics: "Obscura" by Gorguts
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped..._-_Obscura.jpg
Okay, well nobody seems to give much of a **** about Nile, so let's try another one. Step forward, grindy! Oh look! It's a real classic. |
I really know how to pick 'em
|
It's weird and brilliant. I still think there's a lack of consistency on the second half, but it's still a 9/10 album at worst.
But seriously though. Weirdddddd. When you consider that fellow Quebecois Cryptopsy saw the release of None So Vile with a rabid dog as a vocalist before Gorguts released this, you know you're a ****ing weird band. :P I think Gorguts not getting an album deal back then probably has more to do with the fact that death metal fans weren't ready for this album. Ironically, the only people I've ever known who dislike this album are death metal fans. Even the prog. fans acknowledge this as a work of art (except for Trollheart lulz). |
Unassailable
10/10 |
One of those albums I don't quite get but also don't hold that against it. I'm well aware that it's a singular album and I won't tarnish my potential future dick sucking by saying that the riffs are too obtuse for me like an impatient toddler.
|
It's hard for me to articulate what makes this such a monster. The complex rif***e and song structure just touches me in soft places. Every time I listen to it, it's fresh, innovative, and beautifully dissonant. Though I must say that I don't find it all that weird anymore. 10/0

It does make me wonder what extreme metal would have sounded like had post-punk been a much more direct influence from day 1.

The Erosion of Sanity is nice training wheels though.

Beautiful.

Masterpiece of alien, beefheartian metal. Influenced lots of great stuff but still sounds fresh and plain kicks ass. An obvious 10 if there ever was one.
|
It's right up my alley in the sense that it's metal that doesn't conform to one specific genre playbook. The music on this album reminds me of too many different other artists to count. Voivod one second, Death another, Arkona a moment later, etcetera. A lot of these moments, I don't even know what kind of metal to categorize this album as. This doesn't mean that the sound is incoherent. It very much isn't. There's a very confident sense of direction to this album. A lot of extreme metal compositions have a very disjointed feel, but the songs on this album have a real sense of flow. No disjointed, lazy compositions in sight.
Really good stuff. |
I wonder what elph would think about it if he managed to stop being a boring pussy for some time.

a lot could be cut so I only voted 9. Can't remember which but one of these is one of the most boring songs I've ever heard
|
"Clouded" is a bit dull compared to what comes just before and after. It's long and it feels long.
|
I'll never "get" this album, but I can't deny its importance to the genre so I'll score it high. Looks like, to nobody's surprise, this one is in without any trouble.
|
cant decide between 8 & 9 when but i do i'll vote.

alright i voted 8 then. only because it's a great album that's slightly overrated and has it's fair share highs and lows, enough so that i would say it's not a perfect 10. it's like an 8.5 to be honest but my vote isn't going to change the outcome anyway so i just picked a number.

Steeve Hurdle is probably the most underrated metal guitarist of all time.
RIP https://www.invisibleoranges.com/rem...steeve-hurdle/ I know it was a long time ago but listening to Pleiades' Dust, which is a still a great record, really brings home the truth about what Hurdle contributed. |
ah, the album that spawned the only metal song I love so far. I should listen to it in its entirety
