If you're a fan of folk rock, then you'll most likely choose Zep, if you're more of the darker metal edge persuasion, then you'll pick Sabbath. For me, it mostly boils down to the two guitar players, with Page being more subtle and organic with a lighter, whimsical approach and Iommi being more straight forward and rigid with darker elements. Being left handed and missing a finger tip had a big role in his choice of guitar timbre. Hence the darker sound.

Personally, I've had a Zeppelin phase and grew out of it, but I've never gotten tired of Sabbath.

That's a good point. I am a folk rock fan and I do find that Zep is somewhat more eclectic than your typical metal band. Zeppelin experimented with sounds outside of their blues-rock origins, in particular with folk and reggae. Something like Misty Mountain Hop, for example, even has a little bit of a garage rock vibe.

So, yeah, Zeppelin probably does a little more for me than Sabbath might.

Sabbath isn't a 'typical' metal band.

Maybe not but I bet they never recorded anything country tinged like Black Country Woman or Down By the Seaside.

(Not knocking Sabbath btw, just explaining why I prefer Zep)

If they had wanted to record something like Black Country Woman or Down by the Seaside, then they may have well just changed their name to "We're Just a Cheap Ripoff of a Folk Rock Band".

More like prototypical.

Do The Beatles, The Who, The Stones, Queen, etc. get points taken off too for branching out past their base sound and exploring other genres?

Why would you take points off of a band for that? I don't get you sometimes man. Plus the more important aspect of that question is whether or not they did it well.
