What is your favourite Metal genre?

Mine is Death Metal

The Batlord 11-23-2017 04:22 PM

Thrash metal historically, but death metal has been creeping up. Still thrash for the moment though.

Maajo 11-23-2017 04:45 PM

Industrial, I just really like how it's basically the best of both worlds in that it's sort of founded in Jamaican dub music just like hip-hop and electronica even though it's metal. After that, I'm down with everything else, I listen to a lot of fairly standard metal like Metallica, Maiden, Motorhead and Megadeth.

Texas Boy 11-24-2017 12:40 PM

Classic metal, then prog, then power, then thrash.

Trollheart 11-25-2017 06:36 AM

Prog metal followed by power metal, a little doom, a little goth, standard (NWOBHM) and a little thrash.

Should have made this a poll...

psychedelic and experimental extreme metal
death metal
technical/progressive death metal

industrial/electro metal
black metal/war metal

traditional doom metal
whacky thrash metal
nwobhm and other such traditional heavy metals
funeral doom metal
symphonic/gothic/folky variations of extreme metal
funk/nu/alternative metal (even if a few of my favorite bands ever fall here)

Wpnfire 11-26-2017 08:28 PM

Thrash metal. I'm not pleased with the genre today, for a number of reasons. For some reason, thrash metal bands go very hard for the punk-y side of thrash and the death/thrash side, and pretty much no other styles are played. To be fair, the genre was way overexposed in the 80s and every thing has been done. I'd still kill for some prog. thrash (but NOT tech., **** off vektor), but overall, I'm satisfied with what the genre did in '83, and '86-'93.

With all due respect Mondo, your answer speaks to the absurdity of the question, and the genre as a whole.

Born 1960. Metal was Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Moterhead, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden.

Then punk, new wave, techno, hair bands, etc. decided to jump on the train.

And here we are now.

Question #1: What is "Metal" music?

Question #2: How does your definition of metal work into all of these ridiculous sub genres of the "genre"?

Question #3: Why is Frowny still a mod?

Question #4: Why am I still awake?

Frownland 11-27-2017 06:41 AM

Avant-garde death Metal is the best metal genre. I'd say avant-garde metal in general is my favourite but a lot of that is corny as ****.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 11-27-2017 04:11 PM

black metal

always black metal

RiPS 11-27-2017 05:16 PM

Thrash Metal as a general rule, (The old stuff). Although, I really like Pirate Metal but since that's such a niche genre I wouldn't say it's my favourite.

Frownland 11-27-2017 05:21 PM

Punk laws dictate that he is not allowed to listen to metal because a metalhead bullied Morissey in high school.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 11-27-2017 05:27 PM

this time next year elph will be a gun toting trump supporting metalhead.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 11-27-2017 05:33 PM

he's a few years off of his hip hop phase. slipknot and limp bizkit will do the transition work though.

Punk is the best metal genre.
Thus it's grindcore. Grindcore is punk.

A few years ago I'd have said Black Metal... Might still be the case although I've mostly listened to Death Metal lately.

Death metal is great for just wanting to throw on something to bang your head to even if you don't want to think too hard. The simpler, raw black metal has that kvlt production thing that still makes it more cerebral than some nice, savage-as-**** death metal with no pretentions of being anything else. Death metal has plenty of weird ****, but it's also excellent as background mosh porn. So it's just easier to let it play for longer periods.

Black Metal and all of it's sub genres...DSBM, Symphonic, Melodic, Atmospheric although I like some more than others

The Batlord 03-21-2018 06:27 PM

You were doing so well until you mentioned symphonic.

If by Symphonic Black Metal you assume I meant bands like Carach Angren then no you are mistaken.

The Batlord 03-22-2018 04:46 PM

Norsecore in general is extremely hit-or-miss with me. Throw in bland symphonic elements and I'm not saying Emperor can suck my dick, but I wouldn't be opposed to them fondling my balls.
