Death Metal Album Club

**** it, we need more metal participation on this site and with as many album club type things I say it makes sense to have something more focused (there was already a Heavy Metal Album Club and it got 39 responses so we're focusing more). One album a week just to keep this thing moving a guess. Two weeks has been in my experience more conducive to people who have tight schedules, but it also shoots participation in the foot cause people stop caring.

How to pick albums? I guess I could just pick them and **** the haters. We could also do it by country so that every week I pick three countries or something and then the first *x number* of people to vote decide which country we pick a death metal band from (f.ex. Sweden = Unleashed, Poland = Vader, England = Carcass) and I guess I'll pick the album or something. Or, you know, something else.

Honestly I just want to get this thing off the ground quickly and not dither for a week until everyone just assumes that nothing is happening and ****s off. Suggestions for how to do this are welcome, but if we're not ready to move in 2 or 3 days then I'm just invoking tyrannical OP emergency powers and moving forward regardless.

I always need more dm recs. I'm in.

The Batlord 09-12-2017 10:43 AM

So how obscure are you looking for? Obviously it would be silly to do Tomb of the Mutilated, at least not early on, but a mix of obscure, somewhat obscure, and recognizable would be great I guess. Maybe institute something like after a round the first three or five people to rec an album get those albums casually voted on by community interest?

I'm basically looking for a way to choose albums that keeps things interesting while also moving along with minimal delay. So I guess something simple would probably be better. TBH I'll jump at the first good idea that isn't clicking on the random button on RYM. Let's get this **** going.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 09-12-2017 10:43 AM

just about any metal sub-genre other than DM and i would've considered it but i just can't be bothered tbh

i mean it's not bad but it's the least interesting subgenre for me.

Bitch they're all fascinating. You just need to listen to every death metal album before you're allowed to have an opinion.

Trollheart 09-12-2017 10:49 AM

**** it. Take me to school.

I'm honestly curious if you would have any suggestion on how to choose albums to do. Somewhat for laughs, but you also do this **** entirely too often so I figure you've at least got experience to make your opinion possibly worth hearing.

Now that's straight up ignorant.

If we get enough people (four or more), we should do the old school method of people submitting albums and we all vote for which one we do.

Thelonious Monkey 09-12-2017 11:05 AM

One album a week sounds cool. Need to discover more DM to be fair because it was a genre I hardly brushed up on when I got into metal. Will you be reccing the classics to begin with or will this be more obscure DM that nobody's heard?

The Batlord 09-12-2017 11:07 AM

You know what, **** it. If we come up with a better way in time then that's fantastic, but for right the **** now let's just get it rolling with any album. I just downloaded this cause it sounded interesting and different so I'm throwing it down right now in hopes that it's not terrible, but it doesn't sound terrible atm. Next Tuesday we'll pick something else, but until then it's...

Traumatic Voyage - Traumatic (1992)

I'm not going to keep this to Spotify or Youtube friendly **** if I can help it cause **** that, but I'll make sure that if an album is not on Spotify or Youtube that I'll find a link my damn self for you all. But we are not going to limit this thread to bands that are only easily findable. It's ****ing death metal. But here's a Youtube link since they're not on Spotify that I can see.

Sounds fine just so long as it doesn't turn into a cluster****.

We'll figure that out, but for now let's just do the thing that I just did.

The Batlord 09-12-2017 11:24 AM

Oh and I'll be keeping the current album in the OP.

MicShazam 09-12-2017 11:45 AM

I don't like death metal all that much either, so I guess that means I'm joining.

The interesting thing about letting DM noobs like me pick an album once in a while would be that we can then see if we have any idea about what's good or not. Imagine me or Trollheart trying our hardest to pick something amazing in this genre.

Anyway, whatever works, I'm going along with it anyway.

The Batlord 09-12-2017 11:47 AM

So does anyone want a... *sigh* member list? And everyone just recs an album when their turn comes up? Or should we do this by vote like Frownland suggested?

Aren't there waves or something, like Black Metal? Why not do one from each wave first, if such a thing exists? I dunno: I know so little about Death Metal, I'm really not the guy to ask. I would have said go to Metal Archives, hit Death Metal and close your eyes for a random pick.

Except me, of course.

You know that it's not really an album club unless you have a confusing set of convoluted rules, at least half of which are regularly questioned and challenged by one or more members. Two hissy fits or meltdowns a week is essential, and you should really have a ****storm once a month minimum.

If not, you're just playing around at having a club. :D

MicShazam 09-12-2017 11:49 AM

Voting would lead to albums that are well known by some in here being picked often, probably. So it depends whether you want to hear more unknown material, or most stuff that is already sort of vouched for.

I say you do the choosing, as it's your club. You could take recs from people, I guess. I know I'd have a hard time if I was asked. Death Metal? You mean like, you know, Iron Maiden or Judas Priest?

MicShazam 09-12-2017 11:53 AM

**** it, I'm happy with whatever. The only reason I wanted member submitted albums was so that I could make everybody listen to A Perfect Absolution by Gorod, but I'm not even sure it fully qualifies as death metal.

I vote in favor of whatever most other members want.

Death metal never really came in waves as far as I know. It's more scene-oriented, at least early on. Scenes are a thing I've contemplated, but I dunno. After Florida, New York, Sweden, and Finland you're kind of picking at straws.

Ideally, but if you're in then you're in. So get out.

How often do those threads actually last though? And if they do last do they last just because of rule ****storms?

Lulz, I've not listened to much Gorod, and not in several years, but it amuses me that you of all people would like them.

BastardofYoung 09-12-2017 11:58 AM

oh, my favorite topic. Glad to see this is a thing. I let my old post die, and only come here on occasion.

I tend to like a random band or two in genres I don't normally like for whatever reason. With death metal and adjacent styles, it's Gorod and Nile. And maybe the rare bit of Napalm Death.

Like I say, what I know about DM you could write on a matchbox, set fire to it, and sift through the ashes and still have too much space to write.

You won't get rid of me that easily. I'm like a carbuncle that just won't let go.

I won't lie, man: they take ****ing effort. If you don't care, then guess what? Nobody else will. You're gonna have to keep people's interest, keep reminding them, badgering them, pushing them, threatening them. I recommend buying a pair of these cos you will need them.

Nile are pretty cool, I am still pretty partial to "In the Darkened Shrines".

I say to people, if they are fans of Nile, they should check out Necronomicon, who are a band out of Quebec, who do a similar thing, but instead of the Egyptian themes of Nile, use a Native theme, and a lot of that... their album "The Sacred Medicines" is one of my favorite albums.

I'll give them a listen some time later. Right now I've got some music on my stereo that I want to listen to. I'm ridiculously picky with this genre, but they'll get their chance.

Wpnfire 09-12-2017 03:18 PM

I'll tentatively join as well.

I like the idea of us voting on the album, but I'll listen to whatever. Death metal is heavily album-oriented, and it would probably be best to avoid doing 2 or more albums of the same style in a row. I'm assuming this thread will include fusion genres?

I am so open to open everything.

Wpnfire 09-12-2017 03:26 PM

Please don't open everything in front of me.

MicShazam 09-12-2017 03:36 PM

Do I even want to know what's inside?

BastardofYoung 09-12-2017 03:39 PM

you should go by a theme every week.

Like instead of just album, vote on a theme. Offer a choice of say 3 and go from there.

Like lyrical theme (gore, war, whatever), or say region (USA, Finland), fusion.... or something of that nature. so it is based upon a theme.

Wpnfire 09-12-2017 03:52 PM

I oppose voting by lyrical themes. I think stylistic differences are the only way we should group choices.

I mean, if we were going to vote on something.

MicShazam 09-12-2017 04:06 PM

Lyrics don't really matter much in death metal, so, yeah. Voting by other stylistic traits or scenes or something would be better.

Frownland 09-12-2017 04:07 PM

I think we should stick to the theme of good albums for every week.

Janszoon 09-12-2017 04:11 PM

First lyrical theme should be: gruhruhruhkuh.

But seriously, I'm in. Just don't make me deicide (wink) on any rules.

I'm ok with rules as long as they don't become too obscura.

Bottom line: too many rules can cause suffocation.
