Metal is about aggressive, distorted riffs. It's as simple as that. Any song that has that (and can be traced to Black Sabbath) qualifies.

Cryptopsy is basically Darkness Descends taken to its logical conclusion, so by your own metric they have the best riffs.

Hmm for death metal I'm almost inclined to say Ulcerate, but they're too unique to really fit the bill. I'd say Gorguts next but I think that's confusing favourite with "epitome of metal". So as much as I love those bands and Death, I think I might have to agree with Bat on None So Vile.
