Good enough that I'll throw my vote here. Melodic, minor key guitar, mournful lyrics sung with power, kick ass guitar solo, late 70's-early 80's sound. Works for me! "The Hellion/Electric Eye" is probably second place.
I have my own answer for death metal, though: Yes, Possessed, Obituary, Death, etc. have a more "pure" death metal sound, but Origin just beats the **** out of you.

Hmm for death metal I'm almost inclined to say Ulcerate, but they're too unique to really fit the bill. I'd say Gorguts next but I think that's confusing favourite with "epitome of metal". So as much as I love those bands and Death, I think I might have to agree with Bat on None So Vile.
