Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin.
What came later was after the fact. There's no heavy metal without what those three bands were doing in the early 70s. Batlord and Frowny come in screaming in 1...., 2....., 3.....

The question is what is the epitome of heavy metal for you? If those bands, which besides black sabbath are not metal, are what you find to be the epitome then say it. And it doesn't matter, at least for this thread, what started the genre, what defines it is what is important.

Heavy metal as a definition came way before bands like the ones being posted here. What was the foundation for heavy metal? What set it off? Talk to bands from the readilby acceptable era of heavy metal and every single one of them will point to those three bands.

All three of those bands formed the exact same year, 1968. Black Sabbath does not sound like Deep Purple, or Led Zeppelin. Did Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin pioneer heavier music and hard rock? Absolutely. But Black Sabbath would be the first Heavy Metal band. Nothing before that would be heavy metal.

Very much so! Also the real life horror of that song combined with those signature riffs, very much captures what metal can be at it's most sincere

I like your picks. Pretty much everything up through Seventh Son I enjoy immensely. But from NotB through Somewhere in Time is one of the most excellent streak of albums for me.

They have great songs on each album (even the Book of Souls) but over all...
