If we're judging strictly by music then it's The Smashing Pumpkins by a country mile, however I suspect that Texas Boy's original point is more nuanced than that, because the bands a vastly different and comparing them on their music would be retarded.
I think the cleverly hidden point of the topic is who is more egotistical, Billy Corgan or the knob-head singer from Oasis. Now that's actually pretty hard because both frontmen were pretty much willing to torpedo their own band rather than give the other members any sort of creative control. At least Oasis had the proper sense to fuck off when it became readily apparent that nobody gave a shit about them anymore, which is far more than Billy Corgan and his studio musicians can say. So strictly by those metrics, I guess Oasis is better. |

I am selective about what I like from both, but I am far more moved by the songs I like from the Smashing Pumpkins than I am Oasis. A lot of Oasis songs tend to lost my attention, besides their one hit "Wonderwall". However, the Smashing Pumpkins just completely grab me with songs like "Soot and Stars" and "Bullet With Butterfly Wings". Other songs like Disarm and Saturnine are good too. Overall, I pick Billy Corgan's dark writing finesse.

I went with Smashing Pumpkins but it was close.
As a northerner myself, songs like Don't Look Back In Anger and Live Forever are very close to my heart and there's something very appealing about the pure Britishness of Oasis, as well as Liam's voice. However, SP are unquestionably the more ambitious and creative group, and were far more consistent. Oasis had 2/7 good albums with the others having a couple great tracks each, Smashing Pumpkins had 4/5 in their classic period alone with the only bad one (Machina) having some very respectable songs like Try Try Try and Stand Inside Your Love. |
