I didn't include speed metal because it his heavily debated whether it actually a subgenre or not. Even if it was popular opinion on here that it is (I don't think it is,) I still didn't expect anyone to vote for it. Too late to add it now, so you know, live and learn or w/e.

Well, it's an early form of what would become/be called thrash metal, before hardcore punk became such a dominant influence. I've heard it described as basically Maiden at double speed, which is only somewhat helpful, but gives you a very basic idea. Very few bands could be called JUST speed metal, as there was no speed metal scene, and pretty much all the bands who played speed metal graduated either to thrash or power metal later on.
Really it was just one of several names for the post-NWOBHM metal movement in America, and it just got tossed aside once "thrash" won out.
