What would you suggest for someone who loves the old 1st Wave bands and has just realized how cool Gorgoroth are, and just wants some of that grimy, catchy, intense brutality, without all the fancy bull****, and also without the influences of death or thrash metal (i.e. no Aura Noir or Blasphemy, even though I do dig those bands)?
Edit: or at least I'm not looking for blackened thrash or death metal.

Not familiar with the last two, but I just happen to have downloaded albums by Taake and Tsjuder yesterday and today, and I've listened to a bit of 1349. And I own that Marduk album. Swedish black metal could be pretty brutal.

Here's some badass Icelandic black/death metal to blast your ass. It's one of the best of the year totes, a little bit experimental and not at all formulaic. Dissonant like your Portals and your Ulcerates, but all the while very melodic and cold. And heavy. As ****. Very impressive musicianship and ideas and a great listen for fans of all the bands in their tag list: Deathspell Omega, Gorguts, Mitochondrion, Portal, Ulcerate. Iceland is just a badass country anyway. |

**** yes. Just finished Pneuma, and have moved onto their second album, with their newest waiting in the wings. Thank god I now know I don't hate prog or else I might have dismissed this band, but they're ****ing sick. And even if they don't have that grim 'n' evil atmosphere of most black metal, the atmosphere they do have is phantasmagorically unsettling, kinda like Ved Buens Ende. And thanks to them for my new awesome avatar.

Sign - In Somniphobia Yeah I'm sure we all know Sigh, but very rarely do I see people talking about my favorite album of theirs. Japan's turn for prog rock by way of black metal. They've come to be known for erratic genre blending from musical polar opposites (disco black metal) and are praised for their album Imaginary Sonicscape. They're capable of mire, really. This still has WTF genre blends but it's more natural. It is a very thoughtful and beautiful album and I will always be the one to recommend this before Sonicscape to sigh novices. Really, it is fantastically delivered extreme and light hearted prog. Love the album cover so much. |
