I don't know much about music theory and such, but I've always had a keen ear for rhythm. I'd say Ulrich has a very sort of loose and natural feel. He really grooves along with the music and it sounds lively. His deficits are definetely in other areas. For boring, lifeless metronome drums, listen to something like Periphery or that kind of heavily quantized modern prog/metal/djent garbage.

Now, his boring use of cymbals might be more of a convincing gripe to have with the man. And the stupid face he makes when he plays.

It actually sounds very much like old Metallica. I was surprised they were apt to drive down memory lane myself. As Janszoon said it sounds like a Metallica impersonator which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Reminds me of Damage Inc. alot, the rhythym section leads me to that instinctively. As far as Lars being a horrible drummer i'd say he is more then serviceable. He is far better in a live setting where he can venture out of his stale approach. I'm gonna give this one a listen when it comes out and form my opinion at that point. First time i'll be buying a Metallica record since the abomination that is the Black Record.

Too many people are simply lukewarm to that album. Not enough recognize it as the poop smear that it is.

I wouldn't call it a poop smear, but I'd like to not ever hear Enter Sandman or Sad But True again.

The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters are still unabashed classics.

"The Unforgiven" is good. "Nothing Else Matters" is dull trash.

Of course, I've been playing instruments for almost 50 years now--with drums being my first instrument, and I've been playing professionally for over 40 years. It's not necessarily something easy to hear without a lot of experience, and it might take particular sorts of experiences that not everyone would have.

For example, when I was at university, I had an African percussion (group) class with a pretty well-respected percussionist from Senegal. We were a bunch of kids from around the US, so it's not as if we'd grown up immersed in people playing African percussion. Early on, after a class or two just going over basic mechanics and such, we went through a few classes of the teacher screaming "No! No!" at us as we tried playing back a rhythm he was playing for us--it seemed pretty simple. But it turned out that we weren't hearing timing, phrasing and timbral nuances that he could hear, and it sounded like a train wreck to him. It took us awhile to start to get it, but finally our ears started opening up more.

You can't both fail to keep time well and be metronomic, haha.
I listen to Carl Palmer, both live recordings and studio albums, and from what I heard I think he is a very skilled drummer, with a good sense of timing. I am not saying he is the best, but he is among the better drummers out there. I didn't see a single mistake Carl Palmer made playing drums in this video. I'm not trying to pass him off as the best and no one can play like him. There are many Jazz drummer that are tied or exceeds his level of playing, imo. Palmer's solo here reminds me of Jones' solo in Caravan, not an exact replication, but Carl is doing a lot of the same thing. And since this is a Metallica thread I have to follow up video about Lars Ulrich.

The Solo (Carl Palmer)

Jo Jones, Caravan, 1964

Lars Ulrich is the Worst Drummer in the World

He mispronounces Neil Peart name as "Peert", but other than that he seems like he knows what he is talking about.

I also like The God That Failed. Mostly an ok album to me, just overplayed and it doesn't really excite me like their other pre-St. Anger albums do.

Again, I'm not negatively criticizing him. Palmer would be in my top 10 overall.

I hate drum beats, and that's why I like Ulrich. He plays in rhythm with the guitars and the only thing he does other than that is play drum fills. I find his drum fills to be very interesting.

Not even his drum fills make him a worthwhile member of the band. It's not really fair to compare a guy who played in a technical death metal band to Ulrich, but Sean Reinert (ex-Cynic, ex-Death) has that jazz background and he's just so much more creative with even better fills, and far better texture than Ulrich, and they're about the same age too.
