We could go bar by bar, but for example, for the first couple bars, he's melodically playing the riff in unison. Then he comes in with the groove on the floor toms and low toms as a bass(guitar)-like counterpoint to the riff, then at :45 he does a combination of that and playing both in unison with the riff and playing busier counterpoint to the riff, melodically, across his toms. And so on. Last edited by Terrapin_Station; 08-23-2016 at 04:24 PM. |

You don't hear the ride cymbal on that song?

Although I'm glad their modern works are going back to their thrashier sound, it seems like they've been there and done that just judging from this.

Alright, so you don't know what you're hearing. ;-)
There's no ride cymbal in "Harvester of Sorrow". He only uses his hi-hat, crash and china/pang cymbals when he uses cymbals. He often doesn't keep time on his cymbals in the tune, though. There are a couple times when his hi-hat has a ride-like sound that's rather quiet. Maybe that's what you're hearing? |

Whichever cymbal he's using to keep the beat for about half the song.

I'd be frightened to hear people saying things like this play, because they're not parsing what they're hearing very well. |
