It's just the lense of how you see it. Do you understand what I'm saying?

Criticism in the LitCrit sense, though, is often just analysis, and it can just as easily involve positive comments, too.

Etymologically, "criticism" comes from French critique, which comes from the Latin criticus "a judge, literary critic," which comes from the Greek kritikos "able to make judgments" as well as the Greek krinein "to separate, decide."

The academic sense is closer to the sense used for "critical theory," for example, which is "a philosophical approach to culture, and especially to literature, that seeks to confront the social, historical, and ideological forces and structures that produce and constrain it," although that destresses making aesthetic value judgments, which is part of academic (art) criticism as well.

Or, if you're at all familiar with Immanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason, he's analyzing reason from a rationalist (as opposed to empiricist) perspective (hence "pure"). He's not telling you why reason sucks or how it could be improved.

My point wasn't this is what criticism is. I was trying to say is that criticism can be inherently negative through some individuals eyes. I was talking about perception, not nature.

This song was suprisingly not awful. I'm almost looking forward to this album.

An 80 minute Metallica album? It's simply not worth it.

If I had been their producer I'd have trapped them in a closet until they agreed to make a 45 minute album with 12 tracks.

Yeah, I'm generally not a fan of really long studio albums, either. That's one thing I miss from the vinyl days. Around 30-35 minutes as a minimum and 45 minutes as a maximum always seemed like an ideal length of an album to me.

I'm not a fan movies being long for that matter, either. It's not as if I don't like any longer films, but I don't think I've ever seen a film that I felt needed to be longer than 90-100 minutes.

From a creator's perspective, working within limitations like that generally produces better work in my opinion. Tighten that $h|t up.

Writing something more concise than usual would certainly be a healthy challenge for Metallica, but in general I don't mind long albums. It depends a lot on the band, though. Some artists make it work really well.
With movies, I'm pretty into 100-180 minute movies - given than the source material is interesting enough. I wish they made more of those old-timey epics like Spartacus and Ben Hur, that had an overture and a beefy running time. A 160 minute action movie is beyond overkill though. I really hate those modern special-effect-a-thons that just never know when to quit.
