Sepultura is the first band I remember hearing do that style of singing--back in 1986 (well, or I might have heard it only in early 1987 instead) when Morbid Visions came out.

I don't care what anybody says, these are still the best vocals in extreme metal.

Those vocals remind me a lot of the darker vocals on acid bath. These are good too.

The first time I ever heard a scream it was in a song called The Way I Feel by a Christian band called 12 Stones. He pretty much only screamed one word, and it was a pretty weak scream, but after that - I wanted more.

I'm still getting used to the different ranges of screams and growls though, and definitely have my preferences.

Sorry if this isn't any help.

This is the second post about Zao being a Christian band. I could've swore they were satanists.
