I recognize there is still a religious right in the United States, but the most they do is show up to protest outside of concerts, or try to get censorship labels put on records. There not the force they once were when I was little.
as i said, there are bands like that in bahrain and the KSA as far as i know. also, as far as i know, they haven't been targeted by the authorities. maybe they will be eventually. i don't know. makes sense that they would be.

i know about lebanon though, one of the most popular and most loved lebanese musicians of the 20th century was ziad rahbani and hes still very popular today. he's an athiest and hes very open about it and talks about how **** religion is in his music, and yeah people still really love him.

I remember hearing about the first metal band in Iraq after we "liberated" it. Apparently sectarian groups were threatening their lives and they fled to Syria (I believe). So clearly these guys have all the luck.

Don't know if that is in any way representative of anything though.

i mean i guess it depends. the middle east isn't all one big thing thats exactly the same everywhere. in saudi arabia for example, i imagine metal bands would be okay in somewhere like jeddah since its more liberal but not so much in the capital city, which is more conservative. there are bands of course who have had to run away because of threats. but often they run away to other arab countries. so i dunno. its complicated i guess.

Update: had never listened to ^band before, but they've actually released music. I guess you could call them Lamb of God-ish post-thrash with bits of power or maybe prog metal I guess? Nothing special so far but they're not an abomination. And no, even though they sing in English I have no idea what they're singing about (a singer who actually sings clean is a nice touch though). But way too much chugging to be memorable.

No yeah I know. Like I said, I don't know how representative that band is, but I was just putting it out their for the curious. I'm surprised that anywhere in Saudi Arabia would be accepting of metal, which is cool, but in general I know that it's not all fullbody burkas and AK-47s (just the cool parts), and post-invasion Iraq is/was kind of the wild west with religious hatemongering, so YMMV I guess.

i'm not familiar with that iraqi band, and to be honest, i don't listen much to middle eastern metal because i feel like they're just not the best metal bands out there? you know? i personally just prefer arabic folk music but hey thats just me. also i guess its cause most, if not all, of arab metal bands are very amatuer-ish i guess for the reason that they won't really find any mainstream support in the middle east.

the only band whos work i'm familiar with is a black metal band from lebanon called Damaar which means 'destruction'. again, they're not awful but nothing special imo

Ok. So I was thinking of doing for the next battle the big 4 of thrash. Except I don't see on the list an Anthrax album. So, which one should we add so we can do big 4 next.

Just in case there is confusion, battle is still going on.
