I already expressed the way I felt about it and if you think that no one in the world thinks they are not rock and just in a smaller genre of Grunge than you are not thinking straight.
It's like rectangles and squares. All grunge is rock, but not all rock is grunge. And Blind Melon is not grunge.

Don't know, don't care. They just have the one or two songs I like anyway.

Because if some people would categorize them as just rock they are totally different then Metallica or Korn and then if others categorize them Alternative Rock they are different then Early R.E.M. or The Smith. All these categories are actually silly.

I used to think "all these categories are actually silly" as well, mostly because I suck at genres, but I've found that the more I can use specific terms to describe a given artist's genre, the better "luck" I have finding similar artists.

That may be true, but then again if you have Artists like the one I mentioned, Blind Melon that well doesn't seem to fit into grunge, or the the typical rock bands like Korn, or Alternative like early R.E.M. or The Smiths that would confuse me even more.

Blind Melon is alternative rock. Which is a catch all genre for any band that doesn't fit the mold but is still semi mainstream.

So they fit in the same mold as The Smiths and Depeche Mode? That just doesn't seem right.

I always considered Depeche Mode to be more synthpop and electronic. The reality is that a number of genres are too loosely defined to fit only one type of music. Like here's wikipedia's definition.

And while wikipedia is a **** source, I'm just using it to show you how loosely defined alt rock is.

I agree that these genres are way too loosely thrown around.
