Pentagram were formed in 1971, but didn't release their first album until 1985. 80's band?

Probably. I'm just saying that's the common pattern I've noticed.

Does this sound 80's to you?

Hey, I know a band who released a debut album this year that sounds like a 1991 album. I could be influenced or sound like Frank Sinatra. Doesn't mean I'm a 40's artist.

As far as that song goes, it just sounds like heavy metal to me, which got very heavy during the 80's. So, yeah. It sounds early 80's-late 70's.

Except their entire sound, lifted pretty much wholesale from early Sabbath, was from the seventies. They updated a bit for whatever time they happened to be recording in, but a large amount of the material they ever recorded later was written during the seventies.

So is release date of a debut really the best way to classify a band?

No. I admit you were right. Still, that's the common pattern. However, I still think it's one of the better ways. I guess if a large portion of their music was written during a different era, then they could be a 70's band on that special condition.

And here, we have the wild internet troll, residing in his natural habitat: the forums, where he picks and chooses exactly what he wants to hear.

You're right, I do have selective hearing. Be more inclusive than me...

Wouldn't RHCP also be 80's? Ah, whatever.
