Best 90's rock band?

But you know what? I've always loved Nirvana a lot more, Kurt and his voice, band as a whole, basically a group that can be considered to be 90s. And even though, they started in late 80s, they hit in early 90s. I loved that rebel, individual kind of attitude. They did not even like to be put into the whole "grunge" shelf. I do not even know who coined that term?

Dave Grohl coined it to spite Kurt. Pretty common knowledge.

Mark Arm from Green River/Mudhoney started using it as a descriptor for the noisy garage punk sound of the mid 80's Seattle punk scene, though he claims it was used around the same time to decribe likeminded groups from Australia (whose names escape me).

Personally though, I refuse to classify grunge as a genre past those 80's groups (Tad, Nirvana, early Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Green River, etc.), as groups like Mother Love Bone, later Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Pearl Jam are all quite different beasts, taking their cues more from genres like glam rock, stoner rock (err Heavy Psych), sludge/doom metal, and basic alternative rock (honestly, aside from a few tracks on Ten I can't fathom how anyone finds Nirvana and Pearl Jam at all similar?).

Well to be fair, the same thing can be said about hard rock and blues rock. KISS, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and more are all hard rock, but they aren't similar at all.

I clearly remember Alice in Chains being marketed as a metal band before Nirvana broke big, then afterward they were suddenly considered grunge.

Well, you know more than I do. I know they were considered metal on that Clash of the Titans tour at least.

Well. Can't say I can argue with that much. Although, grunge's main characteristic is being distorted and messy, which Pearl Jam doesn't seem to live up to.

Yeah, hard rock is just kind of a descriptor, as opposed to a scene with a unified sound. Grunge is pretty specific, with bands like Mudhoney, early Nirvana, Tad, early Soundgarden, and kinda Mevlins, so other bands are really just tagalongs to a sound that they are only related to at most.

That's where I disagree. Grunge's main characteristic is a teenage angst. Pearl Jam's earlier albums carry that, even if it's slightly. Besides, Eddie's voice was a good example of the lazy vocal delivery many grunge bands were known for.
