And I can only listen to so much Suicide Silence before getting bored, but until then they're rather fun. Might have to go back and listen to their debut to see if I might be coming around.

I think I might do a journal entry on deathcore, but I just wanted wanted to do a quick shoutout to some **** I've been digging more than I thought I ever would all these years later.
I'm finding that some of the bog standard 'core bands are actually quite tolerable in EP form. Chelsea Grin are none-more-core, but their debut, self-titled EP is actually kind of fun, along with Bring Me the Horizon's This Is What the Edge of Your Seat Was Made For. On their longer debuts they still manage to be entertaining in short bursts, but get boring and way too repetitive after a while (though I'm starting appreciate BMtH's ability incorporate actual melody in their otherwise tripe). So if you can't stand listening to a full album, you might want to consider ditching the idea of listening to deathcore LPs and just stick with EPs. They work better than you might expect. I basically think that deathcore might be like punk and hardcore, where they often work better with singles, splits, and EPs, whereas they often don't work in the context of a full album.

Deathcore can be done awesomely, just like anything else. The Red Chord come to mind most definitely, aside from that...
See You Next Tuesday are a hyper-technical deathcore/mathcore band, think grindcore with more chugs and breakdowns. Lame deathcore is often centered way too much around stale riffs and ****ty breakdowns that all sound the same. And those clean vocals suck. This spastic and brutal style is the way to go Glass Casket do it too but have a much more progressive method, awesome with the melodies too. Ion Dissonance get closer to that lame sound, but the technical and dissonant style still shines through. Car Bomb are discordant, progressive, aggressive, spazzy. Sometimes these riffs come out sounding like random chords and notes, but it's really great. Breakdowns usually go for some whacky time signatures. |

Unfortunately they only released the one album, but Eternal Lord's Blessed Be This Nightmare has always been my favorite deathcore album. They are pretty standard on the surface, but they can actually write songs, know how to properly build up to an awesome breakdown, and can incorporate melodeath in a way that actually works. And they're just fun.
