Can you even reference my attempt to stretch outside MM with my Wagner post? No? Haydn the only one, cos you thought of him? I actually think Wagner is much closer to what you hear in a lot of metal today. Viking classical?

Outside of music you could make an argument for Shakespeare's darker theatrical themes. As far as origins of heavy metal I'd have to go with Black Sabbath rather than an individual. Going back to classical influences they worked out the riff for their title track Black Sabbath from trying to play Holst's Mars.

One of the previous posters is 100% correct about classical music being an early influence on metal.
However, in keeping with the parameters of the OP, I'll go with Black Sabbath. Their influence on metal, both early and modern, was huge and highly instrumental.
