Sludge has a heavy hardcore punk influence. Stoner does not necessarily.

Now, they don't haver the same emotional, whiny teenage angst at all. They're more angry than angsty. if there's one thing this 180-grunge-album man knows, EVERY grunge album has that angst, even Pearl Jam has some of it during their early days before they became more of a post-grunge band. Grunge and Sludge came out around the same time, and it's true Melvins contributed to Deep Six, but Deep Six was showing of Sub Pop in general rather than this new sound. Back then, it was still about the local punk scene. Both genres borrow from hardcore.

Melvins had a little bit of stoner influence, but they were mostly sludge. It's easy to see why they would "sound the same" as QOTSA to some.

Yeah I think they definitely had elements of grunge in their sound as well, but they're mainly sludge metal. No disagreement on them shaping it and helping make a much bigger thing though.

They're grunge enough and they're better than all the others so I'll go with Melvins for best grunge band.

A lot of those bands delve into both genres, and they have half the same DNA, so it's pretty easy to get confused. If the New Orleans sludge scene hadn't popped up, directly inspired by the Melvins, then the genre probably never would have developed at all.

Sludge...

Stoner...
