Default Gig Review

Hey folks, earlier in the year I saw King Parrot on their tour for their new album, I wrote a review to be posted online as a part of a subject for school. If you guys could leave some feedback about the review, it would be greatly appreciated.

Gig Review: A Night with King Parrot at Fowlers Live, 15th of May, 2015

A night of Australian extreme metal with King Parrot, in support of their new album "Dead Set", with special guests High Tension, Colossvs, Headbore, and Mammoth

The mighty King Parrot has managed to fly to the top of heap in the Australian extreme metal scene since they formed in 2010. In their five years of being a band, they have been signed to a record label, played overseas in various countries, their list of achievements just keep on growing. Being noticed for their hell-raising stage show certainly contributed to their success, not to mention their unique sound they've crafted with influences from Thrash, Hardcore Punk and Grindcore. Having just returned from their US tour about a month ago, they had just started the tour in support of their new Album 'Dead Set' which was released on 15 May.

The night set off with the first support band, Mammoth, a band from Adelaide. With Mammoth's earth shaking wall of sound with loads of Southern American rock and metal influenced grooves and riffs, and not to mention some of the heavy harmonies created by the three guitarists of the band, and with Dave's vocal work further adding to their southern American rock/metal but still distinctly Australian sound. After Mammoth, came the ferocious Headbore, another band from Adelaide. Kicking off with 'What We Are', the first track from their debut album "Strength in Numbers", then tore through a few more songs, and ended with my personal favourite 'Enemy'. Their second album is expected this year at some point, I recommend picking it up if you get a chance.

The first interstate band to hit the stage was Colossvs from Melbourne with their tasty mix of Black Metal and Hardcore. This unlikely combination of those influences has created this band that has songs that are extremely catchy without being too cheesy. Then came onto the stage, High Tension, A four piece female fronted band from Melbourne that does an extreme metal and indie/punk sort of thing; their music will catch you off guard and make you move. The bassist was experimenting with feedback from his bass to add to certain parts of songs, and the vocalist delivered her lines with absolute precision. High Tension is a band I'd recommend catching live.

I happen to catch the show on their second stop on the album launch tour on 15 May at Fowlers Live. You could hear the crowd's excitement when King Parrot hit the stage, the mosh pit started right up with the first song, the energy of King Parrot made the mosh pit seem even more intense. The majority of their set consisted of songs off the 'Dead Set' record with fan favourites from their first album in there as well; songs such as "Dead End", and a couple other fan favourites. One of the highlights of their set was the use of humour in the show, as well as the way they interacted with the crowd and the bits of crowd surfing done by the front-man Youngy. I definitely recommend catching this band next time they come through town.
