They were. Manowar took the record away from them sometime in the 80's with 129.5 decibels. As far as I know they still hold the record.

Moon isn't only a great (self taught) musician, he's also just a sweet performer. Alongside smashing his drums, once he once employed a Ludwig Visalite kit to its full advantage, filling the see-through toms with water and gold fish.

All of the drummers that have filled in for Moon at one point or another are very talented and have incorporated their own style into The Who's music, but even those drummer's know that....

Yeah, I downloaded a clip of him doin' a solo on the fish set. Kenny jones was cool, but he was no Moon. Listening to all their albums with Moon, and then listening to Face Dances & It's Hard...you can really tell the difference.
