bump. i saw them on the warped tour this year, i was bummed more people didn't show up to their set, they have an incredibly powerful live sound. i didn't know too many songs by them when i checked them out at warped, but it didn't stop me from enjoying it. i've recently got into them quite a bit, betty is an excellent album, as is meantime. favourite song has to be wilma's rainbow. very underrated band

i love Helmet
personally i recommend Strap It On.....it's raw, unclean and just mean and it has this gem on it which in my humble opinion is pure noise rock genius but in all honesty their opus is Meantime....not a bad track on it.....and every song more pummeling than the previous one.....my only gripe is that it's just over a half hour long....way too short |

Never really liked the first 2 albums much. A lot of the songs all sounded the same to me.
I quite liked Betty though, seemed to have more of a pop edge to it.

Together with Biohazard's 'urban discipline', Helmet's 'Betty' is an essential hardcore album.

The only album I ever really liked was Meantime.

which ironically is my personal favorite on that album but he took it to new levels on Aftertaste which is a very underrated album....it just took a few listens for it to set in for me |

I've always kinda hated Helmet. I mean, they were better than a lot of bands featured on the "alt-rock" radio stations at the time but their songs always got really boring after 30 seconds.
True story: Once when I was just old enough to drive, I was driving my younger brother somewhere (he was like 10 at the time). Helmet came on the radio and he said "I hate these bands who look normal and think they sound cool" and then scowled out the window like the little asshole that he was. I'm not exactly sure what point his pre-pubescent mind was trying to make but I found that I agreed with him that Helmet ultimately didn't sound very good. They were just a heavier version of a lot of other bland shit. So I put in my tape of The Sundays just to piss him off even more and realized how much more important The Sundays were to me than throwaway heavy-alternative-rock.

I considered buying Betty for a while and yesterday I saw it was $5.99 on the iTunes store so I bought it. I should have gone with one of their first two albums instead because I did NOT like Betty. I agree with you, the variety is quite lacking on many of their albums, but at least with In the Meantime I like it so much that the variety doesn't really bother me. |
