I think metal as a whole peaked at the latest in the mid-nineties. You can't really speed it up, or make it any more "brutal" than death metal, black metal, or grindcore, and since making music ever louder was the entire point of metal in the first place, that kind of takes the point out of evolving the genre further. Now the only way to be original is to turn experimental, and you can't really start a larger movement around bands whose sound can't be replicated.

To be honest that just sounds like some kind of generic thrash to me.
This is what I would consider challenging... There's no way any metal band could make anything that as multi-layered & eclectic as this, they'd just ruin it with excessive guitar parts, riffs and solos. But i'm prepared to be proven wrong.

If you have to be a musician to like something, then it probably isn't all that great. My uncle's main criteria for liking music seems to be technicality, and I get the impression that he's just trying to justify all those countless hours he spent learning to play the guitar.
