You'd never heard of Deftones? Weird. I could give a crap about them, but they're still one of those groups that are part of white male pop culture.

The only band to come around to pull influence from Deftones, and not sound like a rip off band of Deftones sound. Islander make it work for them pretty well. I'll start with my favorite song from them. New Wave. Quote:

Tried a couple. Bored after about five minutes. They've got a sound, but not much in the way of interesting songs.

@ OmgWTFBarbecue Darkest Hour is a band you should look in to. A favorite of mine. The beginning of Hypatia Rising always gets me pumped. Entire song does, it's epic and awesome. Last edited by CoNtrivedNiHilism; 04-27-2015 at 04:40 AM. |

Melodic metalcore is largely a boring as **** genre, but there's some gold to be found. Only problem being that I can only take so much before I have to go listen to something else, as there isn't a whole lot in the way of variation.
Along with Killswitch, these guys kind of kickstarted the whole thing, and they still sound pretty sweet. I have a lot more respect for PtH than I do other bands, as they actually have a unique sound. My guilty pleasure band. They're Johnny Come Lately's who basically piggy backed on an already played out genre, but they really know how to rip off the earlier bands while using quasi-thrash to add more bite than most. A very hit-or-miss band for me, but this song has one hell of a riff. Here are some of the bands that were the transition from hardcore to what we think of as metalcore. Far superior for the most part. Poison the Well were a band that were more influential than they were successful, but without them all those bands above may not have come along. Anybody exploring metalcore has to listen to Converge. It's just a must. Though they sound nothing like most of the above bands. Ringworm are metalcore that's closer to hardcore than metal. Primitive ****. Another ugly as **** transitional hardcore band. Arkangel are probably my personal fav metalcore band. Brutal as ****, with some tasty thrash and death metal riffs.

You've got to have that brutality and raw, primal energy in your Metalcore, Batty I get that. I'm the opposite, or rather like the mix of both the brutality, and melodic aspect. If I get this kickass growl or scream through epic, expansive verses, and then there's a nice pre chorus before a chorus that's got some really killer clean, melodic vocals...I'm sold. But it's not always this basic, or boring approach like you point out. I think that melodic aspect can really compliment a largely aggressive song well. Trivium isn't the best example of that but you can get an idea what I mean.
I've never dabbled a whole lot in Unearths discography, but I've know of them since middle school, had friends that loved them. Killswitch was introduced to me when I was in middle school. I like Jesse over Howard, not only because Jesse is the original, but I think that even though Howard was more technically versed, Jesse always fit better, a bit more raw and it adds an element to the bands music that was missing after Jesse left the first time. I'm familiar with all the other bands you posted up. I'm not huge on them but they're in my music library. I do get what you mean about the melodic side of Metalcore. Because it does sort of have a small space for growth or not a lot different that can be done with it. Not a lot of variation, like you said. |
