I guess since Metal is popular now, all those different sub-genres of Rock gets co-opted into the umbrella term which is "Metal." I don't consider Psychedelia, Acid Rock, German Rock etc. as Metal, proto-Metal or even "pre-Sabbath metal." Even when watching Sam Dunn's doc either Metal: A Headbanger's Journey or Metal Evolution I noticed he was refrained from calling some bands "Heavy Metal" where others might call them "Heavy Metal" and used the term "Heavy Music" which isn't a term I see anyone really use much. I wonder if he did to avoid the pit falls of labeling.

"Amon Düül II - Archangel Thunderbird" It's from the album Yeti, ADII did a record prior to that. However I don't know if this song was released before or after Sabbath's first album, however it was released the same year so it's more "concurrent-Sabbath metal" than "pre-Sabbath metal." I think it's better to think Amon Düül II as German Rock band, and Bubble Puppy as a Texan Psychedelic Rock band than "pre-Sabbath metal" bands.

All of that being said, I like both songs, and played them not too long ago.
One of the first and best examples:
Link Wray - Rumble

This should be a fun thread...

Kind of has more to do with influencing the sleazy Hair Metal sound than the doomy gloomy feeling of early Heavy Metal, but many people consider the Shadows of Knight's "Girl, I'm Gonna Make You Mine" to be an early example of the Metal genre.

Blue Cheer - 1967 DEMO version of 'Dr. Please'

And I guess I should also include their cover version of 'Summertime Blues' by Eddie Cochran & Jerry Capehart...
