I want to say Robert Plant because I love his voice, love his music. But, if I'm honest, I think Freddie Mercury is perhaps the most talented singer I've heard. Just a pity I ain't a big Queen fan.

Ronnie James Dio!
I agree Freddie Mercury is one of the greats--and while having a wide vocal range alone doesn't necessarily make a singer a "great" singer (whatever that definition means), it's interesting to note that Axl Rose actually covers more most other rock singers--even pop singer Mariah Carey! Take a look at this infographic to see where your favorite stands with regard to range: The Vocal Ranges of the Greatest Singers | ConcertHotels.com |

I'm a singer and though I love Robert Plant I have to say Freddie gets my vote. His range is huge, he's so acrobatic with his voice and always maintains complete control all the time. If you ask a classically trained vocalist whether they've heard of Robert plant, or Bruce Dickinson, you'll probably have to explain what bands they were in, but they will know about Freddie Mercury.
Kurt Cobain also has an amazing rock voice that is often surprisingly overlooked. |
