I need to start getting more into the Belgian H8000 scene. I already dig Liar, and now Congress is ripping apart my *******. Arkangel weren't technically part of the scene, but they were in the same country, so Belgian metalcore was just the tits in the mid-late nineties. None of it seems to have been particularly experimental, just badass and vicious as ****. Expect some more posts about these bands as I explore this ****. But in the meantime...

I saw you originally mention Trivium as one of the metalcore bands looked down on within the genre....and while that may be true, they've got some good material (in my eyes) that's overlooked and undeserving of such negative reactions. In particular, their album In Waves is my favorite of their releases by far. It showed the strongest song-writing and balance that I think they'll ever release (I'm by no means a 'Trivium fan'....In Waves is the only album of theirs that I would recommend or consider to be of any real quality). Just in the case it resonates with you at all, I've posted a small sample of the album with these tracks. You might be repelled by the catchy nature of the choruses (and the vocals definitely aren't the strongest aspect) but I hope you'll find them to be overall pretty well-executed songs. Feel free to disagree completely and let me know what you think! I'm curious more than anything--

I actually kinda like Trivium, and still bump Shogun and Ascension on occasion. I haven't listened to In Waves much since I saw it as Trivium giving up on evolving their sound, and just giving their fanbase what they wanted. And while I don't much care about Matt Heafy's James Hetfield impersonations, or his soulless screaming that just shows that he has nothing to be angry about, his melodic singing is at least catchy. The dude might actually be a decent singer if he quit with the wannabe bull****.

Merauder aren't the most intelligent metalcore band ever, but if you want some quasi-brutal core that's closer to 90's NYHC, then they're the band to check out. Their Master Killer album is heavy as **** and pretty much all-killer-no-filler.

Yeah Shogun has some good material. I definitely like some songs on there.
And yeah, his Hetfield is kinda laughable.....i mean I understand James was crucial to Heafy as prototype but it does come off as seeming....cheesy in a way.

As I Lay Dying
Funny, I like AILD a lot more than Trivium, but for some reason I chose to post about Trivium instead of the former. Metal purists might hate AILD for the more catchy aspects of their music (clean vocals, corresponding chorus hooks, etc.), but I still rock out to some of their quality stuff. I'm sure you're familiar with some of it, Batlord, but I figured what the hell....I'll share some of my favorite tracks anyway. Just in case

Too bad From a Dying Sky only ever had one EP to their name, but what a ****ing EP it is. Just totally brutal and heavy and awesome. If you dig Arkangel then this isn't to be missed.
