I got a bit carried away, but I wanted to put some emphasis on this.

And even look at the Wiki page. It describes it as Technical Death Metal, Progressive Metal, and Jazz Fusion. I just think Avant-Garde shouldn't be used to describe anything that simply deviates from the genre norm, but to describe something that deviates to create something completely new. Focus is more like Jazz Metal than anything else IMO.

Also, when does the next session of voting begin?
None of the bands you listed were doing anything like what Cynic were. The contrast between extreme metal and the melodic jazz and prog passages were totally new at the time. Edge of Sanity and Opeth were still several years off.
