I don't think being technical makes music worse, anymore than I think simplicity is necessarily better. I just can't stand pointless wankery like Dream Theater or Yngwie Malmsteen.

Nah. Do whatever serves the music. If you can make a guitar stand on its head, but the kind of music you're making doesn't require technical proficiency or complexity, then you're just stroking your ego rather than being creative. The members of Bad Brains were in a jazz fusion band before becoming a hardcore punk band, and they didn't make prog punk just cause they could.

I dig Burzum's raw minimalism. Varg doesn't bore me with music that to my prog-dead ears just sounds arbitrary and directionless. Wank or not, that video bored me to tears.
