2112 is definitely an early example of a prog metal album, but like Batlord stated earlier they're an example of a prog band that just happened to play metal. It's prog, and it's metal, but it isn't prog metal.

Ya.
So... trying to explain this in simpler terms, 2112 in particular made use of metal sounds but was predominantly a progressive rock album. It has both on there, but didn't intertwine them in such a way that progressive metal didn't really occur as a good label for it.

They have their metal moments but in general they just flirt with it. They're not going steady with metal.
