And I'm still iffy about Bungle being on there, but it's a great album so I'll let it slide.
I still have to give a lot of that a listen, as I'd love to include Dodhaimsgard's 666 International, but it's hard for someone who doesn't really have an ear for the avant garde to really tell the difference between good and crap. I have to give that Fantomas album another listen, as parts were awesome, parts were perplexing in a fun way, but in all it was just confusing. Not necessarily bad confusing, as Patton clearly revels in making his listeners do a double take at their speakers, but I still don't quite know what to make of what sounds like a bunch of random sound experiments that I'm supposed to accept as an actual album.

And are there any more votes coming in? Eight people have already chimed in, which looks like at least most of the regulars, but I don't want to leave anyone out. If no one votes by the end of the day I might just cut this round short and just get on with the next one.

Dodheimsgard would be a great inclusion as well. As per Fantomas, just take it for what it is and consider that as an album I guess. It sounds less like random experiments to me after repeated listens, but I did get that vibe at first.

Also, come to think of it, I think that Bungle would be more appropriate in the alternative metal category.

Let's just replace each album with Senmuth

Senmuth believes that his target audience is defined as "an educated, socially active and intellectual development of young and mature individuals who know how to conduct self-identity and criticism surrounding reality, capable of resisting the imposed priorities and the impact of the media."
I have to check out anything that pretentious.

I could do that. I'm somewhat satisfied with that category, but I could boot Rage Against the Machine. I like having some diversity on the list, and I like them as a singles band, but I'm not so sure about their albums. I'm also wondering if I shouldn't put Prong in that category, as while they have industrial elements, I think their sound as a whole fits better in alternative. KMFDM could then get their spot.

****. I just realized I snubbed Danzig. Can't have that, but they're too singular to comfortably add anywhere. I wouldn't really call them sludge or doom. Maybe alt metal is vague enough so I can bump Helmet or one of the grunge-associated bands.

And is it just me, or is the thread having more fun debating my lists than they are voting? When the lists are finalized this thread might die. Can't have that. We'll have to have a knockdown, dragout fight over black metal soon.

I think most of us who have listened would agree that La Sexorcisto is better than Astro-Creep. Also I think Prong would fit fine in alternative metal (I would nominate Beg to Differ) but I'm not sure who they would replace, it's a pretty good list already, maybe they could replace Katatonia?

Nah. La Sexorcisto has a less developed sound. Astrocreep is where they finally got it right. The riffs finally graduated from Pantera-ish groove metal to the kind of industrial metal that Rammstein can't do without jumping the shark.

And Beg to Differ is cool, but again, The Cleansing is where they got what they were going for down like they wanted. That heavy, industrial riffing is much better than the quasi-crossover thrash of Beg to Differ. And even if it didn't always work, they managed to work in some great diversity as well.

Added a post-metal list. Moved Neurosis from sludge/stoner to there and replaced them with Boris' Heavy Rocks. List only half-done though.
