Because I try not to go by personal preference. Images and Words is generally regarded as their best and one of the best prog metal albums of all time, so that's why it's there. If I had my way, Dream Theater wouldn't come anywhere near my thread, cause they're awful **** and should be arrested for crimes against music.

With enough volume I enjoy Dopesmoker, but I certainly don't think of it as atmospheric. If the cover didn't have sci-fi bedouins then that would probably never have occurred to you. It just sounds droney and psychedelic.

Uh, all of the lyrics are about that shit so, no, you don't need the cover art to have that take on it.

Images and Words is maybe the more well-known album, but almost every Dream Theater fan will agree that Scenes From a Memory is a better album. The only reason I'm telling you this is because I actually want them to win, and Scenes From a Memory is simply their best album.

EDIT- Just a bit of subjectivity: The completed concept of Scenes From a Memory easily beats out Images and Words' pioneering prog metal. Just because an album started a genre doesn't mean it has to define it. By the way, some of Rush's stuff was definitely prog metal, years before Dream Theater was even around. Could you please just replace it?

Also, as someone pretty familiar with the genre, I can tell you that Dream Theater is definitely one of the best prog metal bands out there.

Granted, this is coming from someone who is hit or miss at best with prog in general, but aside from a few songs and Train of Thought, Dream Theater are just boring wank who do nothing but play rehashed prog that's only vaguely heavier than their inspirations.

Not saying I'm dismissing your argument completely, but I've learned to treat Best Ever Albums with a grain of salt, since it's led me astray with odd choices in the past, just like RYM (which backs me up BTW). And Top Ten List is downright useless -- I mean, come one, every prog fan I've ever heard readily agrees that Octovarium is pointless wank, and yet there it is at #4.

The Metal Sucks Poll is interesting though, and may influence my decision.

First of all, I've only heard two full Rush albums, along with the two singles from Moving Pictures that get occasional radio play, but I've never heard any of their music that actually crossed the line from hard rock to actual metal, and I can't really remember ever seeing them included on any best of prog metal lists. If you've got something to change my mind, then by all means post a Youtube vid.

Secondly, I'll leave it up to the current prog fans of the forum: Trollheart, Unknown Soldier, Chula, Anteater, and Plankton. If they give back you up, then I'll change it. I guess I'll have to send most of them a PM, since only Unknown Soldier ever seems to check this thread regularly.

1. You probably haven't actually heard much Dream Theater, or you're under the impression that anything that isn't extremely heavy is "wank".

2. It is actually useful if you just want to get a general idea of an artist. The reason Octavarium is at #4 is because of the title track.
