Say what you want to about Manowar's ability to actually compose music, but it's at least entertaining to listen to their flubs, unlike Tool's accomplishments.

Trying to think of bands who are specifically prog metal -- not just metal bands that are progressive -- and don't suck, and I can't really think of anything besides Queensryche. I guess Cynic are prog metal who just happen to be a death metal band, and they're far superior to Tool.

I'm still not sure why Queensryche is considered prog metal.

Tool's phenomenal imo, the worst thing about them is their die hard fans. Manowar sucks and so do their fans. Point goes to Tool.

Batty, what Tool songs have you listened to? Maybe I could give you some recs that might convince you you they don't totally suck.\

I think part of it for me is that I got into Tool partly because of their awesome music videos. It's really easy to get into their music while watching the videos. Try it some time.

Another thing: I'm not saying you should change it now, but if bands are allowed on multiple lists, I would put Lateralus on the prog metal list and Aenima on the alternative metal list.

And one more thing: One of the big reasons I like Tool is that rather than all of the giant, theatrical songs that most metal bands go for, Tool reduces metal to its roots. I doubt most metal fans today would even consider Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath metal, but they were the pioneers of the genre. Almost every metal band of the 80s built their sound around these critical band's sound. These bands weren't big and theatrical. They actually had a very raw and unproduced sound. Remind you of anybody I'm rooting for? I rest my case.

I've listened to plenty of Tool in my lifetime and have listened to more of them in recent history due to this thread than I had any desire to. I'm good.

I'm not sure why we are going to have a doom metal battle at all. Dopethrone's victory is all but assured.

Right? Just like Primus and the alt metal victory.

I thought you were a Dopesmoker kinda guy. And also that you preferred the Sleep album Dopesmoker.
