I listen to plenty(ish) out there music, but not because of the little experimental things that I just am not equipped to notice. For example, I love (some) no wave, because of how it perverts rock music (like the Contortions or Teenage Jesus and the Jerks) or how it uses rock elements for its own nefarious purposes (Glenn Branca and early Sonic Youth) but while still having something to latch onto. I'm not necessarily concerned with the fine details, just the finished product. Quote:
Also, not being a poetry/lyrics guy, spoken word doesn't really resonate with me in any way unless there's some element to catch my ear (such as the menacing voice of Attila in "Agartha" on Sunn O)))'s Monoliths and Dimensions. Quote:

White Zombie Tool Hey Frown, didn't realize how much Primus was influenced by Beefheart. Primus is great BTW.

Pretty massive Beefheart influence, but I think that Primus wears it's Beefheart influence on its undershirt while sporting a Residents influence on their sleeve. It's mostly in the vocals, but after digging through all of the rezzy's discography, listening to Primus is like The Residents-lite. Residents have a massive Beefheart influence too (some theorize that Beefheart may briefly have been in the group as well), so I guess it comes full circle.
Around three minutes in you can really hear it.

Does Claypool acknowledge it at all?

I've heard about Claypool talking about the residents from other residents fans but I haven't heard those interviews directly (laziness, etc.). However, Primus did cover Hello Skinny and Constantinople on Frizzle Fry so I don't think the influence can be any clearer than that.
